3
MAIN POINTS
THE SEPARATION
THE PRESERVATION
THE REVELATION
1. The SEPERATION – Sanctification
a. 1Th 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you
completely;
i. Sanctification is the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of His people
– spirit, soul and body.
ii. Sanctification and holiness are not a words that we hear much of in
most sermons today.
1. Sanctification means to set apart, to consecrate, to be holy
into God.
2. Illustration; oil and vinegar will eventually separate
themselves, although it seems they go together well, by
nature they do not blend well together.
iii. DEFINITION:
1. ἁγιάζω – hagiazō – hag-ee-ad'-zo
a. From G40; to make holy, that is,
(ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally)
to venerate: – hallow, be holy, sanctify. –
b. Total KJV occurrences: 29
c. Thayer Definition:
i. 1) to render or acknowledge, or to be
venerable or hallow
ii. 2) to separate from profane things and
dedicate to God
iii. 2a) consecrate things to God
iv. 2b) dedicate people to God
v. 3) to purify
vi. 3a) to cleanse externally
vii. 3b) to purify by expiation: free from the
guilt of sin

4

viii. 3c) to purify internally by renewing of the
soul

d. Part of Speech: verb

iv. The early church had to overcome 3 major gods in their
society. They had to intentionally and consciously be separated
from the world around them. Because of the sanctification work of
the Holy Spirit in their lives they were persecuted by their society.
But, they prevailed in their faith and pressed forward into the things
of God. Today, many of God’s people worship at the altar of God
and the altar of the gods.
1. Aries – the god of war – BUT – Jesus the Prince of peace
2. Mammon – greed and corruption – Christianity = giving,
generosity
3. Aphrodite’s – sexuality – Christianity – strong marriages,
commitment

2. The PRESERVATION
a. and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be
preserved blameless
i. Preservation means to keep or too guard from decay, stagnation, or
1. tēreō – tay-reh'-o
a. From τηρός teros (a watch; perhaps akin
to G2334); to guard (from loss or injury, properly
by keeping the eye upon;
b. that is, to note (a prophecy; figuratively to fulfil a
command); by implication to detain (in custody;
figuratively to maintain); by extension to withhold
c. (for personal ends; figuratively to keep
unmarried): – hold fast, keep, serve, watch.
i. Total KJV occurrences: 7

ii. Illustration – the key to preserving food, is the vacuum sea, the
idea that outside elements cannot spoil the food, bacteria can’t

get in. In the spiritual, the Holy Spirit seals God people.
Elements can include vinegar, salt, water, oil.

3. The REVELATION of Christ
a. …at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
i. The church has lost focus that Christ will return once again.
Christians are at their best when they are living for eternity.
ii. People are in the party era – “life is short, party it up”, but eternity is
a long time, believers need to be living for eternity and not for the
temporary.
iii. We are living in the 6 th day in history:
1. From Adam to Abraham – 2000 years
2. Abraham to Christ – 2000 years
3. Christ to present – 2000 years
a. 2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing,
that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years,
and a thousand years as one day.

Quote
Holiness is not an accumulation of the things we do or avoid. Holiness is the work of
Holy spirit in the inner person.
CONCLUSION and CALL
I want to encourage you today to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the areas that need to be
separated in your life, where do you need to be more holy, where do you need to be preserved,
and are you looking for his appearing.
2 Tim 4:8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved
His appearing.
