Main Text
I believe that Jesus is speaking to his friends (the church), His word declares that they
free from:

 Dead things of the flesh
 The tomb of the past that have locked them in
 Grave clothes that have bound them

It is God’s desire that that His people are free and delivered, and alive – COME Forth!

Jesus Raises Lazarus

Joh 11:38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a
cave, and a stone lay against it.
Joh 11:39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was
dead, said to Him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four
days."
 Background: Lazarus is a friend of Christ who died and was buried. He
had a personal relationship with Jesus but he still died. In fact, Jesus
waited until Lazarus passed away before he arrived on the scene. He
wanted to demonstrate that he was more than just a healer, but that He is
resurrection life incarnate.
 When the stone was rolled away there would be a stench of death that
would be unbearable and most undesirable.
o What STINKS about you? Jesus wants to remove it!
o If we are going to experience resurrection life we will have to face
the stench first. God is not afraid of the things that stink in your life.
o Jesus had to overcome unbelief, human nature, reason, and
common sense. We must overcome the naysayers – It cannot be
done
o We talk about empowering grace – we just don’t believe it

Joh 11:40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you would believe you
would see the glory of God?"
 The glory – the weightiness of God – the power of God – that supersedes
the natural laws that govern us

6

 By faith – believe to see the glory of God
 Mix the word with faith
 Cannot it not be done because we have not seen it done?

Joh 11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man
was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank You that You
have heard Me.
Joh 11:42 And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who
are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me."
 Confidence in our petitions to God – He hears us
 Believe – what do you really believe?

Joh 11:43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice,
"Lazarus, come forth!"

 We must hear His command to come forth

Joh 11:44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with
graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Loose
him, and let him go."

 People have to be loosed
 Jesus resurrects them – we the church loose them an let them go
 Resurrection power
o life that bears witness to the resurrecting power of Christ
o Even your friends and family may bury you but God always
comes to resurrect you
o You must experience His resurrection power
o Loose him – freedom
 Come forth from the grave
 Be loosed from the grave clothes
 You must be loosed

The Sequential order of the story
In order to truly understand and study the Bible properly we must apply the principle of
sequential order. This means the sequence in the way that things occur. The Bible is
not written in random but rather it is systematic an orderly. We must pay attention to
what comes first and apply these lessons to our Biblical walk of faith.

7
1. Roll away the stone -impediments must go
2. Faith – believe – release the glory – do you still believe?
